Wikipedia turns Ten on the 15th of January 2011. Many Indian cities are celebrating this event.

Cities making steady progress

The following 10 cities in 8 states have experienced supporting them. These cities would mostly be comfortable with local experienced wikipedians and volunteers.

Andhra Pradesh

  • Hyderabad - Seems to have reasonable community support. Also support by Arjuna Rao.


  • Bangalore - Supported by Bangalore wikipedians.
  • Mysore - Supported by HPN.


  • Kannur - Supported by Anoopan and other Malayalam wikipedians.

  • Has two events. One in Noida and the other in Greater Noida. Need to merge into one single event.

New Delhi

  • Has two events. laxmipur event to merged into the main event.


  • Organiser/Volunteer is assuming this can be an exclusive and by invitation event. Need to make it more open and community focussed.


  • Volunteer has started a parallel Wikimedia India page on facebook. Need to share URL and move them onto main Facebook group.

  • Check if your city is already registered on the Wikipedia Tenth anniversary website. If yes, find out who is organizing the event in the city. Contact them to offer your support and assistance for the event.
  • If you city is not registered, Register here for organizing a Tenth Anniversary event in your city.

Task forces for co-ordination and helping events

Propose the following Task forces to be comprised of experienced Wikipedians in India to help Indian wide celebration events.

Task force A: Reaching out to more cities

Increase reach of event to more cities and states.

Task force objectives:

  • Focus on reaching out to more cities and states
  • States with no participation yet (14) - Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura & Uttarakhand.
  • Use FOSS, Social media, Educational institution channels to locate willing volunteers.

Task force members:

Task force B: Supporting the volunteers

Increase reach within a city and ensure hygiene factors.

The focus of this task force is to reach out to a sizable audience in a city, ensure typical wiki meetup DOs and DONTs are taken care of, help of any kind with ideas for logistics.

Task force objectives:

  • Interact with volunteers on<City> support page to assist them.
  • Help volunteers get more participants using FOSS/Social media channels.
  • Help with ideas to get a local venue.
  • Help with structuring content for the event (excludes creating content).
  • Supporting volunteers with DOs and DONTs where the volunteers are not experienced wikipedians themselves.
  • Help volunteers with wiki pages as needed.
  • Advise volunteers on covering and documenting the event.

Create or collate quality content that can be used by the various city events.

  • Presentations

  • Handouts
  • India newsletter

  • Merchandise (where possible)
