In November 2014, he got his first exposure to the Commons community, and has been very active ever since. Within three years of his joining, he has uploaded more than 10,800 photographs to Wikimedia Commons. He frequently visits Yercaud Hills, Yellagiri Hills, and Sitheri, to photograph various species of plants, animals, and birds. His uploads include 2,450 plant species, and 7,675 sub classifications of plants. He spends minutes, hours, days, even months and years to identify scientific names, before uploading them to Commons.
One of his significant works include, uploading images of 200 rare and endangered plant species that belong to Yercaud Hills to Commons. Interestingly, of the 1003 Moth images available on Commons, 300 were contributed by Elango. He also has credit of uploading images of some of the rarest species like Shortts shield snake, Yercaud day gecko, Green lizard etc. and modern stone age tools like Dolmens, Cairns, Menhir etc. that are available in and around Yercaud Hills. Elango's uploads to Wikimedia Commons can be seen at the category:Category:Files by User:Yercaud-elango
Elango says that he daily allocates one hour to work on Wikimedia Commons, and he feels that allocating time for Commons is something that we do for the society. In 2014, he published his first eBook, and in the last three years, he has published 21 eBooks, which have been downloaded 3,94,303 times. Apart from his regular work, he is now planning to upload his eBooks to Tamil Wikisource. For his services to the society, the Tamil Nadu Governemnet conferred him various awards and titles, which include Yezhluthu Sirpi, Ariviyal Mamani and Vallamaimigu Yezhluthalar.
Having made his first edit on Kannada Wikipedia in 2016, he has been very active ever since, and created around 170 articles, with more than ten thousand global edits. The fascinating part of Sangappa's contributions is linked with the Google Doodle section on Kannada Wikipedia Main Page. Every day, the subjects that are honoured by Google by featured them as their Doodle, are created/improved by Sangappa within a few hours of its updation at 00:00 hrs everyday. He says that in this way, he ensures that all the popular topics of India are well represented on Kannada Wikipedia.
Sangappa makes most of his edits through mobile, or from his friend's laptop. He also puts the wait during traffic jams from his home to office, and vice versa, to the best use, by making edits on Wikipedia during that period.
|Nitesh Gill at TTT 2016|
One of her main focus on Punjabi Wikipedia is the Gender Gap. In her attempts to bridge the gap, she has been a trainer to BBC 100 Women Edit-a-Thon and also collaborated with "Feminism in India". She has also organized many outreach activities & edit-a-thons like Sanjh, Asian Month, Womens History Month, LGBT Edit-a-thon etc.
Nitesh's another major achievement has been the #WikiYear challenge, which she completed successfully on 28th February 2018, wherein she has created a Wikipedia article everyday, continuously for 365 days. The most interesting part of the story comes to say that all the articles that have been created are about women. She also contributes to Wiktionary, Wikisource, and Wikimedia Commons.
|Sangram at Mysuru|
From his contributions, it can be said that Sangram is an ambassador of #100Wikidays challenge. After having participated in Rathajatra Edit-a-thon, Nabakalebara Edit-a-thon, and Wikipedia Asian Month in 2016 & 2017, he decided to regularly commit himself towards improving the coverage of information on Odia Wikipedia. His first challenge was #100WikiWomanDays, which he started on 8 March 2017 i.e. International Women's Day. Having successfully completed it on 15 June, he took up another #100Wikidays on 13 July. Immediately after its completion 20 October, he took up his third challenge on 21 October, and completed it on 28 January 2018. As this journey continues, he is now amid of his fourth Challenge, which was started on 29 January. With these, he aspires to complete his WikiYear some day.
Sangram is a graduate in Computer Science and Engineering, and is now working as an editor at an Odia magazine. He also an avid photographer, and maintains a photography club. He advocates that new editors need to focus on learning the rules of Wikipedia, and contribute to good quality articles.
He sees lots of potential in the Wikidata and has been its contributor since its inception. He briefly served as an administrator there and has now 39000+ edits. He believes that it will be the central data repository of the internet with its effects going very far. He wants to revive Gujarati Wiktionary through upcoming Lexicographic Data on Wikidata.
Though by profession he is a dentist, he rarely contributes to the health-related subjects. He now wants to expand his contributions to dental and other health topics on English and Gujarati Wikipedias. He considers the lack of good resources in Indian languages and on Indian topics is a challenge and he is working to improve the situation with help of fellow Gujarati editors. He believes: One edit is too many and thousand is never enough.
Varun's journey started on Wikipedia by editing articles on Indian Music. He has a large collection of Music DVDs and to catalog his music library, he started searching for information on the Internet. When he couldn't find all the information at one place he started editing and putting the same on Wikipedia. This turned him into a Wikipedian.
Varun presently works for Military Engineer Services and is based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
