As wikipedians, please list your expectations from the Wikimedia India chapter on this page. We initiated this discussion with community during the recent Wikipedia 10th anniversary event in Bangalore.

Please share your thoughts and expectations.

  • Support for Wikipedians activities.
  • Outreach.
  • Coordination for meetups and issues.
  • Help Wikipedians network.
  • Help Wikipedians solve problems.

writing as contributor, therefore community member

  • Transparency
  • Building strong peer-to-peer collegial relationships with the community
  • Regular communications with and providing support to the community
  • Representation from different Indic language communities in an appropriate form
  • Many members
  • A solid outreach program or plan of action for the first year
  • A unique niche, which the chapter can call its own, given that the Foundation will also have an office in India
  • Smooth working relationships with the Foundation's India office/program

My intention is not to put pressure, but to highlight the hopes I genuinely have for the chapter now that it is a legal entity. And I will have similar expectations of the Foundation (on the relevant points), once it starts it's India office. --Bishdatta 23:50, 14 February 2011 (EST)

Achal Prabhala

(as a member of the community in India)

  • Open meetings/ transparent record keeping of decisions
  • Friendliness towards community members; encouragement and support of community-driven projects
  • Opening up of membership to as diverse and large a group of people
  • Opening up of chapter leadership to as large and diverse (yet workable) group of Wikimedia project representatives (e.g. language projects, non-Wikipedia projects from within the movement)
  • Independent track record of fund-raising and fund management
  • A record of good governance in the management of the chapter
  • Inclusion - at all levels, especially towards newcomers to the Wikimedia movement
  • Outreach, esp. in areas/groups/geographies in India that tend to be under-represented (for e.g. the North East, women, working class, etc. etc.)
  • Active and friendly evangelism/ programmes to inculcate newcomers into Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects
  • Innovation: finding newer and more exciting ways of engaging with Wikimedia projects in India

I am attempting to reply to some of the comments above, given that the first AGM is a few days away now.

  1. The Chapter has become more transparent in its activities with monthly reports and the Wiki being more active now.
    1. No doubt, we can do better and hope to do so over time and with new EC member on board.
    2. Does a monthly IRC Chat help?
  2. I hope you will agree that the Chapter has become more responsive in its stewardship and obligations towards the community and community efforts, the Wiki Conference included.
  3. The membership base has grown but not as fast as we would have liked and it isn't as diverse as we want it to be.
  4. The Chapter has begun to engage more frequently with the WMF and the India Office. We hope that this will ensure we are all on the same page with no overlaps and work towards a stronger Movement in India.
  5. While we have a Grant that has been approved, we do not yet have FCRA approval to bring the money in. Till such time, we will be able to offer limited material support, no financial support but lots of moral and people support to ideas and projects from the Community. Please bear with us on this.
  6. We have also drafted a set of project's for the year and ask for support and volunteers for this and other projects that one might have in mind.

While the Chapter might not have done very much till date, we hope that this has set the base for growth in the years ahead!

Great. Congratulations to all on the chapter board for the new website, for the recent Wikipedia Academy with librarians, and for organising the AGM - looking forward to it.
