Report
Prior to the official start of the workshop , Hisham Mundol and Jayantha Nath checked out the arrangements in the OS and System Programming lab. After we were all set, students who had been waiting outside filled up the lab and within a span of 20 mintues, 80 passionate young learners were sitting in the lab. It was a spectacle to see students boot their computers to the Wikipedia homepage in their Firefox browsers.
Hisham Mundol kicked off the workshop by appreciating the passionate work of the coordinators who along with Phoenix ( the official tech club of NSEC) had made the necessary arrangements for the workshop. He started proceedings with a flurry of mind-boggling questions like “Who writes Wikipedia articles? “ , “Why doesn’t Wikipedia collapse?” . The introductory session yielded great enthusiasm which set the stage for the 3-hour Wikipedia learning and editing session. Statistics were given to the students and they include : “Wikipedia, the 5th most visited website” and” India is the 6th greatest contributor to Wikipedia (in terms of funds)”.
The workshop continued with the “Anatomy of a Wikipedia article”. “Let it be” (Song by Beatles) was used as a reference.
There was an unexpected glitch when users were blocked from creating new user accounts (only 6 were allowed). After some debugging, we realised the exception of the 6-accounts-per-IP address had been added for an incorrect IP Address. The issue however remained unsolved.
The session progressed with Jayantha Nath explaining ”How to edit Wikipedia”. Students edited some articles and ran the “Show preview” feature. Doubts related to the Wiki markup was discussed.
Jayantha Nath explained the significance of references and how to add them.He and Kalyan Sarkar discussed the state of Bangla Wikipedia and that a lot of regular contribution was necessary to make it grow, considering the low ratio of Bangla Wikipedia articles and Bengali speakers in the world.
Hisham Mundol discussed how important NPoV (Neutral Point of View) is while writing/editing a Wikipedia article. He also discussed why bloggers are not always great Wikipedia editors.
Topics and issues like: “Do not argue that corporations are criminals, even if the author believes it to be so.” , “Do not copy-paste to Wikipedia what I got from somewhere else.” were discussed extensively.
Hisham continued explaining the identification and significance of reliable and unreliable sources. Then he moved on to demonstrating how to add articles in the user space without actually publishing it. We learnt that Wikipedia enhances writing and research skills. Moreover, Editing Wikipedia helps you to learn to analyse situations neutrally .
The rigorous yet fun session ended with the distribution of Wikipedia badges and stickers. We concluded the session by felicitating the speakers with bouquets and souvenirs.
