Project scope

The potential of Indian women editors is largely untapped. The Wikipedia Workshop for Women aims to equip its participants with the rudiments of contributing to Wikipedia, and to introduce Wikipedia as an encyclopedia and a concept to them. The workshop is free-of-cost and open to all women. At a macro level, the Wikipedia Women Workshop endeavors into the possibility of bridging the gender gap in Wikipedia.
We have deliberated on the following sessions:

  • Session 1: Introduction of all organisers and participants
  • Session 2: Participants split into groups
  • Session 3: Hands-on editing by participants
  • Session 4: 'Why edit Wikipedia?'
  • Session 5: 'Adding references to Wikipedia articles'
  • Session 6: The concept and practice of 'Notability' in Wikipedia
  • Session 7: 'Facts about Wikipedia'
  • Session 8: Session on the Wikimedia Commons
  • Session 9: Hands-on session on 'Uploading photos to the Commons' (Group activity)
  • Session 10: Quiz time
  • Session 11: Women Wikipedians share their experiences

Project goal

The project will bring in the experiences with participating in two international conferences and international projects aimed at increasing the participation of women in Wikiprojects.

Non-financial requirements

"We would also like Communication team's help with a press release, before the event and once the project is complete."

Fit to strategy

"With this workshop we are trying to reach out to a larger population as well as to bring volunteer participation on Wikipedia."

Measures of success

" We will consider the project as a success, if 50% of the attendees become the regular contributing to articles in English and their mother tongue."
