Tangentia Jigyasa Quiz 2019

The third edition of the Tangentia Jigyasa Quiz was held on March 3rd, 2019 at The Hotel Mandovi, Panjim in Goa.Wikimedia India has contributed to the event as a Knowledge partner.

2nd Round:Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru Photography Contest

The 2nd round for Wikimedia Commons based Photography competition, organized by IISC, Bangalore in collaboration with Wikimedia India successfully completed in January, 2019.

Project Tiger Community Consultation

A consultation program for Project Tiger took place in Chennai on 2nd and 3rd March, 2019. Some of the objectives were to revisit the previous iterations and identify strength and challenges, how to make the subsequent iterations much more effective. Vishwanath Prabhakaran And Sanket Oswal represented Wikimedia India.

Community Feedback Drive

Wikimedia India hosted a community feedback drive right before the Project Tiger Community Consultation took place. Community members had put up their suggestions to be taken for subsequent iteration of the program.

Creative Commons and Wikimedia Commons

Session on Creative Commons in Aurangabad by Sanket Oswal (WMIN)

Wikimedia India hosted a session on Creative Commons and Wikimedia Commons in the city of Aurangabad, Maharashtra. There were 16 participants who attended this session. Participants were briefed about various licenses under CC. Session also highlighted on (a) Type of work is expected on commons, (b) Explicit Permission, (c) Copyrights, (d) OTRS.

Women’s Day : Story Telling

Wikimedia India along with the larger Indian community celebrated Women’s Day by working over a month in identifying and documenting stories on different Women Wikimedians from Indian languages under its Featured Wikimedians of the month program. Along with, regular featured wikimedian of the month facilitators, two special guest facilitators had joined the exercise, User:Netha Hussain and User: Manavpreet Kaur.

Since it is 2019,19 stories on different women Wikimedians from India were documented.


WikiGap is an event during which people around the world gather to add more content to Wikipedia about women figures, experts and role models in various fields.Rajeeb Dutta, member, Wikimedia India hosted an event supported by Wikimedia Chapter(India) in Kolkatta, West Bengal on 9th March, 2019.

Wikisangamotsavam is the annual conference of Wikimedians of Kerala. It is the annual conference as a gathering of active Wikimedians in Kerala. The main objective of the event is to increase the Wikimedia offline activities in Kerala, develop skills of the new Wikimedians and bring together all the Wikimedians in Kerala. Viswanathan Prabhakaran, Executive Committee Member alongwith several Wikimedia India community members from Kerala led this initiative.

Fagu Baskey
Fagu Baskey is a Wikimedian who edits on Santhali Wikipedia. Fagu is a school teacher in a village school near Baripada in the Mayurbhaj district in the state of Odisha. He is one of the few editors who worked on the incubator to make Santhali Wikipedia live. He got to know about Wikipedia from his friend User: R Ashwani Banjan Murmu and has since then been contributing to the free-knowledge movement. Rarely having any access to a laptop, Fagu used to edit on his mobile device until he received a laptop under Project Tiger.

Fagu's major edits are on Santali literature and he endeavours to document much of Santhali heritage. Fagu believes by contributing to Wikipedia he is serving the mission of increasing awareness for his language over the internet. Fagu's major contribution has been towards Wikipedia however he wishes to work on other projects like Wikimedia Commons, however limited Internet bandwidth in his village has been restricting him.

Anant Rathod with User Name: Gazal world is an editor on Gujrati and English Wikimedia Projects. He was introduced to Wikimedia by his friend and an active editor on English Wikipedia User: Nizil Shah who helped him by providing step-by-step guidance on Wikimedia editing. Anant's favourite area of editing has been writing about Indian literature on English Wikipedia and vice-versa for Gujarati Wikipedia.

On four different occasions, his work has been featured under Did You Know section on English Wikipedia. Anant's good quality contributions have helped him attain access rich scholarly and archive content like JSTOR, Oxford, Project MUSE, EPW, EBSCO, Edinburgh University Press, De Gruyter and Questia. Anant believes that pay-wall resources restrict a volunteer on improving quality content on Wikipedia. To overcome this, he has been working as a tireless volunteer on the resource desk on English Wikipedia and has helped in providing more than five hundred reference material to the volunteers. The most encouraging practice in this exercise has been visiting the physical library - Gujarat Vidyapith Library where he gets the books physically scanned and provides it to the needful.

Anant is associated with several literary associations and has also participated as a poet for Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. Being a student of Chemistry, he stays in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Wikimedians at AIR Mangaluru

The team members of Karavali Wikimedians were invited for a detailed discussion about their activities of past present and future at All India Radio on 18th March, 2019. The participants were User:BHARATHESHA ALASANDEMAJALU, User:Kishorekumarrai, User:Kavitha G. Kana, User:Vinoda mamatharai and User:Vishwanatha Badikana. The objectives were, future plans for Kannada and Tulu Wikipedia, Editing and adding new words to dictionary, Copyright policies of Books, Photographs, Video and Audio, Women Wikimedians and Wikimedia to home.
