Project scope

Wikipedia has been accepted worldwide as a source of health information by both lay people, medical students and healthcare professionals. With about 155,000 medical articles getting about 400 million page-views each month, there is an urgent need for ensuring that information available on Wikipedia is accurate, current, reliable, and free from bias.

Cochrane contributors work with a stated mission: gatekeepers for "trusted evidence, informed decisions, and better health", so collaborating to ensure the quality and reliability of Wikipedia medical articles is a logical extension of Cochrane's mission to produce, disseminate, and advocate for the best available evidence.

The pre-symposium and the 2 workshops which are planned is to take this collaboration to the next level.

Project goal

This effort is for new or novice editors in Wikipedia who wish to learn more about Wikipedia and to actively contribute to the improvement of medical articles. We aim to introduce the participants to: 1. Wikipedia, its contributor community, and the values it holds important. 2. How to edit articles in Wikipedia, specifically how to register as a user, creating userpages, general editing, citing and referencing, and following some good practices.

Participants wishing to make specific edits are encouraged to prepare and bring edited text, references, and other resources in advance of the workshops to maximize efficient use of limited time. This series of events at the Colloquium geared towards strengthening the partnership between Cochrane and Wikipedia.

Non-financial requirements

(1) Adequate communication is provided through various mailing lists, we will need continued support till the end of the event.
(2) We seek to do a press release post the event, and will need support from Communication team and EC
(3) Wikipedia Pin-ups if provided will be useful souvenirs to distribute amongst participants

Fit to strategy

This project shall support the key organizational objectives of:

  • increasing reach (more people being able to access or contribute to Wikipedia or our other projects),
  • participation (more people actually contributing),
  • quality (more useful content or higher quality existing content),
  • credibility (more trust in our projects),
  • maturity and effectiveness of the Hyderabad SIG, India Chapter as a whole; with more citation based editing and research based evidence provided for.

Other benefits

We believe we can get some positive media attention for this project, which may also persuade medical students to use and contribute to Wikipedia in the longer run. Possibly, at a later date, we will be able to work with medical practitioners, experts, colleges to free up their material for sharing on wikipedia.
