Gender gap Special Interest Group

Bridging the Gender gap in Wikipedia

Only 9% of Wikipedians are women.
Currently only 6% of our chapter women members are gender gap SIG members.
(please encourage more to participate)


  • 24.5% of Wikimedia India chapter members are women.
  • We have members from 4 states and 10 cities.

Priorities

  1. Encourage more women members of the chapter to participate. IRC for connecting.
  2. Target at least 3-4 active women members in each city and language wikipedia.
  3. Mentor new women editors and help them through the initial paces.
  4. Create 10 very active editors and 30 new editors across India.
  5. Encourage more women leadership in the Chapter (EC, SIGs).
  6. Participate in events like WikiWomen's Collaborative, Ada Lovelace editathons and AdaCamp Bangalore (nominations open, please participate).
  7. Create visibility for active women editors and members of the chapter for others to emulate.

Projects

  1. The 100 women project - List the most important 100 women in India (current and historically)
  2. Ensure that the 100 women project articles have GA quality pages within a year.
  3. Translate these to 10 languages across the country in respective wikipedias.

Outreach

  1. "Get 1 new women member" campaign - Each member to get one new women member.
  2. Identify one women focal point for cities: Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune & Trivandrum.
  3. City specific campaign / outreach in colleges or fora.
  4. Target students to join. Target homemakers to join (many are very educated and have bandwidth).
  5. Twitter and Facebook campaign #WeareWomenWikipedians
